It makes sense to use bamboo as it is lightweight and wild bamboo forests are plentiful, especially in our part of the world such gadget and techno products. Not only that, bamboos are the fastest-growing woody plants in the world. Some species can grow more than 40 inches in a day, imagine that! I am a big fan of organic and natural practices and it seems some gadget manufacturers are dreaming of going in that direction as well.
Although it is not yet practical, we’ve seen an Asus laptop in bamboo casing, Dell’s desktop in bamboo casing and Fujitsu’s laptop in wood casing. There’s more. I’ve even read about a harddisk in wood casing, thumbdrives in wood casing, bicycles made of bamboo, etc
Back in day we showcased our examples of Eco Friendly Bamboo product design and creative packaging design using coconut tree , we thought it would be interesting to revisit this topic. But this time we wanted to concentrate on product conceptualisation, as these products focus more on the design than commercialisation. These are Products which have design purity and are likely to dictate and shape the future of what is possible in the world of design and manufacture -the packaging design on ahlidesain.com
Why Bamboo?
It grows fast. Bamboo, a member of the grass family, is among the fastest growing woody plants in the world. It can grow up to 24 inches per day and reaches full harvesting maturity in three to seven years, significantly faster than hardwoods.
It’s strong Remarkably, bamboo’s tensile strength is similar to that of steel, making it a reliable material for protecting technology equipment in transit.
It’s easy on the environment Bamboo helps promote healthy soil. The plant’s deep root systems protect against land erosion, and when harvested correctly, it doesn’t require replanting after harvest.
Ensuring Sustainability
Dell works with bamboo packaging supplier Unisource Global Solutions (UGS) to ensure all processes associated with the bamboo’s production meet the highest standards. The company sources its raw bamboo from a forest that follows Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) principles and criteria. The bamboo forest is located in China’s Jiangxi Province – far away from pandas’ known habitats. Dell worked with UGS to secure FSC-certification for the bamboo’s full chain of custody, from the forest to the manufacturing facilities.
Dell, Georgia Pacific, UGS and Environmental Packaging International are also in the process of certifying the packaging for recycling.
The Three C’s of Smarter Packaging
In December 2008, Dell announced a plan to revolutionize computer packaging. By 2012, Dell aims to reduce packaging volume by 10 percent; increase the amount of recycled content in packaging by 40 percent; and increase the amount of materials in packaging that’s curbside recyclable to 75 percent. To achieve these goals, the company is implementing a strategy based on the three C’s:
- Cube : How big is the box? Could it be smaller?
- Content : What is the packaging made of? Could it be made of something better?
- Curb : Is it easily recycled?
With the ability to soften skin, grow lashes and even out skin tone, bamboo is used in a variety of beautiful ways. There are many uses bamboo in industrial sustainability and degradable products
- Bamboo Fencing

- Bamboo Poles
- Bamboo Paneling
- Bamboo Slats
- Bamboo Edging
- Bamboo Natural Matting
- Bamboo Household stuff
- Bamboo Kitchen stuff
- Bamboo T-Shirt (i just shocked not knowing that bamboo soak up water faster than cotton)
- Bamboo Packaging and many more…
All of them created to complete our eco friendly ways of life. Starting from concept, design, availability and non invasive (laboratory and research). Now, we can see that many products use bamboo in industrial not only packaging but also in whole industry that match –even break the line of conventional. The bamboo beautifully designed to be moldings and trim match the bamboo needed as can sold by adding a professional, finished look to your home and lifestyle.

Bamboo Gadgets From Micro Innovations
If you like accessories that made up from a bamboo shell, then you can choose one of these gadgets from Micro Innovations. Most of these accessories will be available in a nearest electronics store in April or May 2009.
Our Panda-like obsession with bamboo is really paying off of late, what with the hundreds of bamboo ASUS laptops scattered around the gadgetmostwanted review, the few dozen cubicles we’ve built out of Dell Studio Hybrid sleeves, and now this complete line of bamboo peripherals from Micro Innovations.
Sure, they’re ugly and a little low on tech — the speakers, card reader, webcam, USB hub, keyboard and mouse couldn’t be any more generic in specifications – and as far as we can tell there’s nothing particularly "green" about the typical-seeming internals, but apparently the (undisclosed) pricing is right.
Bamboo Gadgets: These eco-friendly computer peripherals made out of bamboo are said slightly lessen the environmental impact of these devices, and may even help people “care more about the product” and “keep it longer,” Treehugger, the manufacturer says.

Lexon: Green Modern Bamboo Gadgets
Walk into store full of gadgets and home goods, and you’re generally hard-pressed to find things like clocks, radios, calculators and lighting made with something other than plastic or unsustainably produced metal. If you do manage to score something made of wood, it’s probably a holdover from the paneling-obsessed 70s – not exactly stylish.
A company called Lexon is looking to put an end to that problem with minimalist, modern gadgets and home goods made from bamboo, corn plastic and LED lights. Items like the Mini Dolmen Radio, Dolmen LED light and Safe Calculator fit seamlessly into modern interiors, and are also purportedly eco-friendly (it’s unclear whether the bamboo is FSC certified, and then there are problems with corn, but we digress…)

Green Gadgets – USB Bamboo Speakers
Wood seems to be the fashionable material at the moments for gadget manufacturers, I have received quite a few email over the last few days about gadgets made from wood, the latest is this pair of USB Bamboo Speakers. If you’re a fan of the natural look, you might enjoy these USB speakers made of bamboo. I tend to make fun of wooden gadgets a great deal. However, I don’t mind this one despite that it keeps the look of wood. It has an Asian appeal to it, that most boring wooden gadgets never seem to have. Plus, I like that bamboo is a grass, so it’s going to regrow far faster than a tree.
The USB Bamboo Speakers use the natural resonance of bamboo, and can be connected to your notebook, nettbook or even your mp3 player through the 3.5mm audio jack. Dell Bamboo Sleeve
Dell – Bamboo Computer Sleeve. Dell have been producing computers with a bamboo cladding for a little while. The design offers a distinctively warmer and more analogue feeling alternative to the category’s usual glossy plastics. The company is now replacing some of its packaging (such as the moulded cushions used to protect in transit) with the material as well. Most municipals currently don’t recycle bamboo, but the company is in the process of helping change this. Dell Studio Hybrid was in the same shape.

Bamboo Packaging on Dell Netbooks
Competition to be and look green in the personal computing industry is reaching a fever pitch. Debates rage over which companies are raising the bar and which are baiting and switching. Packaging, to be sure, is a big piece of the puzzle. The exterior of the packaging is made from 25 percent post-consumer recycled materials.
Bringing bamboo into its packaging is part of an approach that Dell dubs the "3 Cs of smarter packaging": Cube (reducing the size of the overall package), Content (the stuff from which it is made), and Curb (can it be readily recycled by end users?). In keeping with the third C, Dell and its partners are working to get its bamboo packaging certified for recycling, so consumers and recycling plants alike know what to do with the stuff. Woody Bamboo, an eco-friendly USB flash drive
cologists are crying hoarse over the extensive use of eco-detrimental plastic, and this has forced quite a few gadget-makers to opt for an image make-over. A few others have tried to establish their USP by developing ‘eco-friendly’ gadgets. For MemoTrek Technologies, therefore, the development of a bamboo USB flash drive made perfect economic and brand sense. The ‘Woody Bamboo’ is high on aesthetics and ecological value, while retaining the primary purpose of a USB drive – data storage. The NAND based flash drive will be available in 128MB, 256MB, 512MB, 1GB, 2GB and 4GB variants. The high speed USB 2.0 certified memory stick sits inside a ‘green’ shell made out of hardened bamboo that can last for eternity. Designed primarily for corporate use, Woody Bamboo will make an excellent promotional gift.
The Woody Bamboo comes packed in an exquisite bamboo slide-box or, based on the customer’s preference, a paper giftbox that is made out of recycled carton paper. Replacing the regular fabric lanyard is a hemp-band that further adds to the USB drive’s eco value. A leather cord option is also available if you wish to entertain your sartorial desires. If you are guilt-laden about your gadget frenzy, it is time for some soul cleansing. Get a Woody Bamboo!
